Sounders Game - We will never forget...

On May 10th, Sunday, Green River Community College Student Programs took students to see the world’s most popular game arriving to Seattle. With Sounders doing very good considering this is their debut season in the Major League Soccer, students have enjoyed the atmosphere of the former most expensive stadium of the country, the sold out home of the Seattle Sounders, the Qwest Field.

The trip started at 8:30 a.m., leaving the college and heading towards the stadium. Right after arrival, students have done some shopping in the team store and headed towards the Occidental Avenue for the “March to the Match.” March to the Match is an activity takes place before every home game, organized by the biggest supporter group of the Sounders. The fans walk down the avenue and chant for the Sounders.

The stadium was full of different flags due to the diverse squad of the Sounders. Seattle Sounders signed with Swedish star Freddie Ljungberg this summer. Ljungberg has played for Arsenal and West Ham United in the English Premier League. Some fans have stated “We came here to see Ljungberg more than anybody. It’s exciting to see world class players in Seattle.” The playmaker has met the need of most of the MLS teams, which is to have an orchestra leader to hold and release the ropes of the team.

The game started at noon. The opponent, Los Angeles Galaxy, was lacking their star David Beckham, who recently went to A.C. Milan on a loan until the European season ends in June. Sounders went up in the 22nd minute with a strike of their French striker Sebastian Le Toux. Soon after, the Galaxy answered with a header of Alan Gordon, who didn’t turn down the great cross by Mike Magae in the 35th minute. The breakpoint of the game was on the 42nd minute when Sounders forward Nate Jacqua was brought down by Galaxy defense in the box. The referee decided the position should not have been rewarded with a penalty and let the game to be played on.

The second half was not as rich as the first half regarding the positions. Sounders right-back James Riley received a red card in the 57th minute after a brawl in the midfield, forcing his team to play the remaining 33 minutes with ten men.

After the game was concluded the students and staff came back to school at 3:45 p.m. The evaluations were great about the event; everybody loved it and wanted the student leaders to plan more soccer games to go.
